BUNIONS & BUNION SURGERY

A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe. These form when your big toe pushes against your next toe, forcing the joint of your big toe to get bigger and stick out. Bunions often form from wearing narrow or tight shoes. Bunions can also develop because of an inherited structural defect. Smaller bunions, known as “bunionettes,” can also develop on the joint of the little toes. These bunions can be unsightly but, more importantly, they are often incredibly painful. Fortunately, procedures are available to rectify the situation. Contact our office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Barbaro for bunion surgery to relieve your pain once and for all. If you have any questions about our bunion surgery services, call us today!

BUNION SURGERY RECOVERY

  • For the first 2 weeks after surgery, you will need a surgical boot to protect your foot
  • Avoid getting your stitches wet
  • Wear a brace after you take your boot off. This helps support your foot while it continues to heal
  • Use crutches for assistance
  • Ice your foot to speed up the healing process and reduce swelling
  • To minimize your pain, wear shoes with extra room and avoid high heels
  • Physical therapy may be helpful to strengthen your foot
  • Full recovery can take an average of four to six months

OTHER SERVICES OUR FOOT SPECIALIST OFFERS

Laser Foot Surgery

Lasers have been used in surgery for 20 years by eye surgeons and other physicians, however, it was not until the early 1980s that laser surgery was used to treat foot ailments. The laser beam is used in place of the scalpel to remove ingrown nails, infected toenails, warts, and deep calluses. With its minimal side effects, such as minimal scarring, and little-to-no pain, it’s no wonder more people are considering laser surgery.

Diabetic Nerve Testing

Here at our office, we also specialize in diabetic nerve testing. Individuals with diabetes sometimes suffer from foot problems that can often be attributed to neuropathy, or nerve damage. Dr. Barbaro and his team will take the time to thoroughly examine your feet, checking your muscle strength and tone, tendon reflexes, and sensitivity to touch, temperature, and vibration.

PRP Therapy/Treatments

PRP therapy, or Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy, is a revolutionary new therapy that uses blood with high levels of platelets containing growth factors for acceleration in healing and regeneration. PRP therapy promises to speed up the healing of tendon injuries and osteoarthritis without subjecting the patient to significant risk.

The super-concentrated platelets help accelerate the healing of injured tissues and are used to treat:

  • Ankle Problems

WHEN SHOULD YOU SEEK HELP FOR HEEL PAIN?

All parts of our body experience pain from time to time, but it's important to know the signs of a major issue and learn when to contact our office for professional assistance. You should reach out to our foot doctor about your heel pain if you show the following symptoms:

  • Severe pain and swelling near your heel
  • Heel pain accompanied by fever, numbness, or tingling
  • The inability to rise on your toes, bend your foot downward or walk normally
  • Severe heel pain immediately following an injury

You should also seek medical care if your heel pain continues when you're not walking, standing, or putting weight on it, or if your heel pain has continued for more than a few weeks even after you try rest, ice, and other home treatments. Our podiatry specialist will take a closer look to identify and treat the cause of your heel pain and help you return to your normal routine.

ELIMINATE YOUR HEEL SPURS WITH OUR ASSISTANCE

A heel spur is a calcium deposit that causes a bony protrusion on the underside of the heel bone. A heel spur is usually painless; however, there are times when it can cause extensive heel pain. This heel pain is frequently associated with plantar fasciitis, a painful inflammation of the tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. Dr. Barbaro provides custom-made orthotics, and anti-inflammatory medications, as well as cortisone injections for these conditions.

Any type of movement that pulls on the plantar fascia causes a heel spur to develop. Without proper care, this can cause extreme pain and discomfort. Check out the following section to learn more about some of the causes of heel spurs.

Unusual Walking Patterns

An abnormal walking pattern can put excessive stress on the heel bone, as well as the surrounding nerves and ligaments.

Running

While exercise is important to stay healthy, excessive running or jogging on hard surfaces causes extreme stress to the heel bones.

Poorly Fitted Shoes

Wearing shoes that don’t properly support the arch of the foot can put weight on the heel, causing a heel spur.

While these are some of the most common reasons that heel spurs develop, genetics and pre-existing conditions can also cause chronic ankle and foot problems.

If you’re living with heel pain, it’s time to see our podiatrist to find an innovative treatment option that works for your needs and lifestyle. Contact our office in Nassau County, NY to schedule a consultation.

STRESS FRACTURE OF THE FOOT

Though more common among athletes and runners, stress fractures occur when there is a crack or severe bruising within a bone. A stress fracture is usually caused by overuse and repetitive activity, but they also occur when people change their activities, or the surfaces on which they practice these activities. If you’re suffering from foot pain and think you may have a stress fracture, visit Dr. Barbaro’s team right away.

SYMPTOMS OF A STRESS FRACTURE

There are many possible signs of a potential stress fracture. If you or a loved one are experiencing some or all of the following pain symptoms, reach out to our podiatry specialist to schedule an appointment:

  • Constant Pain: The most obvious symptom of a stress fracture is constant pain, aching, or swelling at the site of the fracture. This pain can occur at rest, during normal activity, or with everyday walking.
  • Tenderness: If you experience "pinpoint pain" or tenderness when touched on the bone, you might have a stress fracture.
  • Ending Pain: If your pain is present throughout the activity and resolves with rest, don't be fooled! It is entirely possible to have a stress fracture that presents this way.
  • Unending Pain: If you experience pain throughout the activity and it does not go away, you should make an appointment for additional testing.
  • Affected Mobility: If you have difficulty hopping on one leg or an inability to shift your weight or hop on the affected leg or foot, you might have a stress fracture.

Stress fractures should be addressed quickly to prevent more severe pain or long-lasting injury. Our podiatry specialist can take a look and devise a treatment plan for you.
